2023 Art in the Porongurup
Please refer to the 2023 photo gallery at the end of this page.
Fostering community engagement and positive well-being this free community event has developed over 21 years to encourage and stimulate established and emerging artists to show case their sculptures. This Great Southern Event is now well established on the local event calendar
In 2023, while the PCA provided governance, this event was only able to be operational due to the passion and drive of a dedicated group of individuals in this very special community. A standalone event committee was formed and over 8-9 weeks they ensured the event continued in 2023. We wish to acknowledge this group, Wendy Diletti, Annette McCready, Fiona Glenn, Scott Drummond, George & Sue Corke, Dave Taylor, Karen Brown, Allen Kennedy, Strawb Healy, Pauline Cobain and Donna Stain, on a job well done.
In conjunction with Art in the Porongurup, the Porongurup Craft Group ran their annual Art Bazaar, the two events entwine very well, complementing both Sculpture and Art. The focus of the two is fun and enjoyment.
Event Chairperson, Wendy Diletti said, “With a mammoth effort by volunteers from Friends of the Porongurup, the Porongurup Craft Group, the Porongurup Community Association, as well as other local individuals, we have proudly hosted this event from the 7th to 15th April 2023. Whilst as a new group coordinating this event we continue to learn and hope next year we will attract new and emerging artists.”
Despite the inclement weather the infamous “Art in the Dark” fund raiser featured on the evening of Friday 14th April. A family friendly evening featured pizza, entertainment by Dave Taylor and his friends, and provided even more entertainment during the torch light tours. These tours take a lighter more humorous interpretation of the art world, especially if you are lucky enough to have Scott Drummond as your guide! The sculptures take on a different form at night, transcending in darkness to reflect shape and form in different aspects. Sue Corke’s Cocoon sculpture shimmered with droplets of rain in the light beam. And Gigi Fogg’s Zuzzlebuzz glistened like an animated wild bee of the night under torch light.
The event finale was the awards presentation at the Porongurup Hall on Saturday 15 April 2023, followed by a complimentary sausage sizzle.
Wendy’s Committee want to thank the many artists who have contributed to this year’s event, and to the general public and community, with donations, proceeds and funds raised going towards upgrading our proud community local hall.
Events such as these do not happen without the support of our sponsors. We wish to acknowledge and thank: Friends of the Porongurup, Porongurup Promotions Association, Porongurup Inn, Shop and Tearooms, Bendigo Community Bank, Corkescrew Gallery, Shire of Plantagenet, Bolganup Homestead, Lothlorien Gallery and Annette McGready.

With thanks to our Judges, Kevin Draper and John Greeuw, we announce and congratulate the following winners:
- Senior First Prize: Sculpture No.4 – “Trees” by Melaine McQuillan
Judges’ comments: Exquisitely fashioned plant forms contradicting and yet balancing the raw found objects on which they are fixed.
- Senior Second Prize: Sculpture No. 17 – “Cocoons” by Sue Corke
Judges’ comments: A series of interesting, permeable structures that are part of a sequence, yet individual in their own way. It made us think about shelter in a changing environment.
- Highly recommended: Sculpture No. 6 “Game Changers” by George Corke.
Judges’ comments: Beautifully constructed work with an underlying political agenda. Balancing technical skill with political concepts.
- Highly recommended: Sculpture No. 7 “The Project” by Wendy Diletti.
Judges’ comments: An exploratory artwork.
- Youth Prize: Sculpture No. 29 “Zuzzlebuzz” by Gigi Fogg.
Judge’s comments: This work puts charm and enchantment into every day recycled materials. A delightful reference to the blue-banded bee.
- People’s Choice: Sculpture No.32 “A flight of Cockatoos inspired” by Dave Taylor.
