Celebrating the Winners of Art in the Porongurup 2026

Open Judges Award $2,500

41 – Fading From Sight – Melaine McQuillan

Judges’ Comments:
There is a strong connection between the sculpture and the natural setting. It tells a compelling narrative of a disappearing bird in flight. Appropriate use of materials, using the destructive nature of fire not to destroy, but to build. The viewer is prompted/tempted to reach out and save it before it completely fades. The focus on a local species gives the work strong ties to the region and inspires greater care for the animals and their habitat.
(People’s Choice: 5th place — 105 votes out of 1,819)

Open Judges Award Runner-Up $1,500

15 – Fayah – The Tree Ent – Jo Potts

Judges’ Comments:
The work embodies a strong presence that draws the viewer in. Highly appropriate use of materials and technique to create a compelling story of a mythological guardian, yet also calls to our duty and need to protect natural spaces. Compelling use of language in the maternal cradling of a sphere (the world) and upon closer inspection a local plant inside, linking it to the region in which it currently resides.
(People’s Choice: 6th place — 99 votes out of 1,819)

Youth Award (12–17) $800

11 – Thoughts of a Teenager in the Digital Age – Lilli Barndon

Judges’ Comments:
Strong relevant and timely concept and message championed with care by the artist. The overall work holds presence, yet also carries attention to detail – even on the screen of the phone held by the figure. Its placement in the park evokes uneasiness and urges viewers to get off screens and back to nature.

Youth Award (5–11) $200

6 – A Heavy Lift!!! – Dempsey Hodder

Judges’ Comments:
Clever use of found materials to translate the large scale of a moment into a diorama that captures the artist’s personality and interests. The scale of the artwork invites the viewer to step closer to investigate. It also represents the smaller scale of the artist themselves.

School Award $500

30 – Scarlet Banksia – South Stirling Primary School

Judges’ Comments:
Striking sculpture of a hardy native plant. Clear evidence of collaboration and innovative use of materials. Rich colours grab the attention for a distance and very inviting to walk around to discover more. The use of recycled materials adds an extra layer to the meaning of conservation.
(People’s Choice: 10th place — 75 votes out of 1,819)

PCA Celebrating the Porongurups Award $500

26 – Mother Numbat – Nicole Chalmer

Judges’ Comments:
The work demonstrates mastery of craft and intricate attention to detail. The depiction of a mother numbat with her babies is compelling in reflecting hope and serving as a call to action for the protection of endangered species in the region. Acknowledging recent reports of the numbats’ return is worthy of celebration.

Healing Hands Wildlife Care Young Artist Wildlife Award $500

43 – Leave Us Our Home Amongst the Gum Trees – Albany Secondary Education Support Centre (ASESC)

Judges’ Comments:
This work demonstrates exceptional synthesis of concept, material and site, responding to the backdrop of the Great Southern. The items/elements chosen are such that multiple artists could contribute to make a whole. Much like we should in the preservation of nature. Consideration of conservation with respect to both nature and country gave added weight and meaning to the collaborative work.

People’s Choice Award Winner $1,000

23 – Nemesis – Jess Burcham

1st place: 167 votes out of 1,819

People’s Choice Award Runner-Up $500

Clever play on words and consideration of the space in which the work is situated to communicate the work’s message. Varied doors and glass create interesting visual framing.

Judges’ Highly Commended

A playful piece, encompassing key ideas important in the life of a child – family and fun. Materials used are appropriate for a child, turning everyday materials into an artwork about everyday life.

Clear, effective juxtaposition through considered use of materials and postures of each figure successfully makes viewers introspective of their own habits.

Judges’ Highly Commended

Judges’ Comments:
A very appropriate theme. Contrasting a serious matter (drinking water) with playful characters creating a useful feature designed to invite wildlife.

2026 Art in the Porongurup Announcement!

Mark your calendars for one of the Great Southern’s most anticipated creative events, Art in the Porongurup 2026! Running from April 3–11, this much-loved nine-day outdoor sculpture exhibition at the Porongurup Hall promises to inspire, delight, and bring people together over the Easter break.

We’re currently seeking sponsors to help reward our talented artists and keep this cherished community event free for everyone. In 2025, we welcomed over 1,700 visitors, and with Albany’s bicentenary and the Porongurup Range’s 100th anniversary in 2026, we’re expecting an even bigger turnout. Sponsorship forms are now available here.

Now in its 24th year, Art in the Porongurup has become a signature event on the local calendar. Set among the natural bushland surrounding the Porongurup Hall, the exhibition transforms the landscape into a vibrant sculpture trail. Visitors can wander through the artworks, vote for the People’s Choice Award, and even purchase unique pieces.

Alongside the main exhibition, the Porongurup Craft Group hosts its popular Art Bazaar inside the hall, creating a lively mix of art, craft, conversation, and community. Families can relax with coffee, cake, and light lunches while exploring the exhibits.

Art in the Porongurup welcomes artists of all backgrounds, established and emerging alike. With no set theme, participants are free to explore their ideas and may submit up to three entries, either individual works or a cohesive series.

This year carries extra excitement as the region celebrates 100 years of Porongurup National Park. To mark the occasion, two special spot prizes will be awarded:

• For the sculpture that best celebrates the Porongurups

• For a school or youth entry that best celebrates native wildlife and its conservation

Hosted by a dedicated subcommittee of the Porongurup Community Association Inc. (PCA), this not-for-profit event aims to foster community spirit and creativity while providing a fun, accessible experience for everyone.

Whether you’re an artist, an art lover, or simply looking for a beautiful day out in nature, Art in the Porongurup 2026 is not to be missed. Join us in celebrating creativity, community, and the stunning Porongurup landscape.

2) HHWC Young Artist Wildlife Award – $500

This year is extra special! To mark 100 years of Porongurup National Park, Healing Hands Wildlife Care (HHWC) is partnering with Art in the Porongurup to inspire young people across the region to celebrate native wildlife through sculpture.

The award recognises sculptures by individual youth or school groups that explore:

  • Native wildlife and their habitats
  • Conservation and protection of species

Meet our distinguished judges for Art in the Porongurup 2026

Wayne Lim

Wayne Lim is a documentary filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist from Singapore, based in Perth. Grounded in a search for self and home, his practice brings together a variety of methods to reconstruct memories via moving-image works.

Ronelle de Klerk

I am a hobby artist. My journey has taken me from South Africa, where I was born, to Australia, which is now my home. I have been making pictures since I could hold a pencil. After high school I studied a Bachelor of Science degree and have been working as an Optometrist since. In between work and raising a family I have kept my interest in making art alive, falling in love with oil painting along the way. Mostly self-taught, I continued my explorations until Albany Summer School expanded my knowledge of oils and introduced pastels. Keen to keep learning, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts at Curtin University. My studies have introduced me to new ideas about art, art history, art movements, art media and various techniques, including sculpture.

Key to my art practice is the desire to reduce waste. I recycle and up-cycle as much as possible and source my supports for painting and photo transfer from second-hand shops and found materials. This way I give discarded items a new purpose and meaning. We are privileged to inhabit a beautiful world. As nature shapes our history, we respectfully explore, celebrate and nurture this relationship.
